Bacton Church

The clergy for Bacton Church were appointed by Dore Abbey. Sir John ap Harry would have christened Blanche here, her godmother being her aunt Lady Troy. Blanche and her family attended Church Services at Bacton and her ancestors were buried here. In 1573 her brother Symond would bequeath money for the tower. An embroidered altar cloth is now displayed which perhaps was a gift from Blanche herself.

Before November 1578, probably in 1577, Blanche commissioned her monument for Bacton Church which includes the epitaph she composed herself. The sculptures are of Blanche and Queen Elizabeth I – the first time the Queen was depicted as Gloriana (pages 145–148 in ’Mistress Blanche, Queen Elizabeth I’s Confidante’).
